Boise Open Art Studios (BOSCO) Tour 2016

Sat, Oct 08 // 10:00 am to 06:00 pm

More info Less info

Boise Open Art Studios (BOSCO) Tour 2016 takes place Friday, October 7 from 4-8pm, Saturday October 8 and Sunday October 9, 10am to 6pm. Hours may vary, so check the Studio Tour Guide (available in The Boise Weekly, Boise Art Museum, ArtSource Gallery, Boise State Student Union Gallery and at www.boiseopenstudios.com ) to verify.

To visit an artist’s studio is to see the artist’s mind at work. Learn about the materials they use, find out what inspires them and see how both shape the resulting artwork. Boise Open Studios weekend is an opportunity to ask questions, interact with local artists and buy work directly from the creator. The tour includes an art giveaway- inside each Studio Tour Guide is a Passport, at each studio visited the public receives a stamp to put on their Passport. Each completed Passport is entered in a drawing for a chance to win art from BOSCO artists.

Artists’ Open Studios weekend kicks off on First Thursday, October 6 with Preview Night at Boise Art Museum, featuring demonstrations by BOSCO artists and digital samples of member’s art. This year, BOSCO is the Sept-Oct feature exhibit, “A Glimpse into the Artist’s Mind III,” at Boise State Student Union Gallery with the opening reception on Sept 13. Event maps and Passport for the art drawing will be available at both locations.

BOSCO is a non profit, professional artists’ volunteer organization dedicated to the visual arts, with a goal of promoting and fostering a greater understanding of the creative process. Members apply and are selected by an independent juror annually.

Members work in a variety of media including fiber, book arts, pottery, photography, oil, acrylic and watercolor painting, printmaking, encaustic, glass, custom furniture, sculpture, and enamel and in a wide variety of styles. The public is encouraged to attend one of the opening events or visit our website www.boiseopenstudios.com to plan the weekend’s route. With over 40 participating artists, there’s a lot to see!

The McManus Comedies. A fine and Pleasant Misery

Fri, Oct 14 // 07:00 pm to 09:00 pm

More info Less info

In 1992, Patrick F. McManus, already recognized as one of America’s funniest humor writers from his columns in Field and Stream and Outdoor Life, and his many books, wondered if his stories about growing up in rural Idaho might work on the stage. Pat used his own fear of the dark as a central theme to weave some of his favorite pieces together. The result was described by one reviewer as “a wonderful cross between Mark Twain and Bill Cosby.”

The two-act play begins as Pat rummages through an old trunk. Each discovery -- a piece of tent, the slingshot “Whomper,” his collection of dried road kill, a cracked brace from his sled, “Rosebud” -- triggers recollections of a childhood incident.

The key to the success of Pat’s writing, and in Behrens’ acting, lies in activating the imagination of the audience. Just enough detail is provided to connect the viewer to each misadventure. The audience fills in the blanks, making each story their own.

In this way, specific incidents become universal experiences. Behrens portrays more than 12 different characters, each suggested by nothing more than a change of voice, posture

or movement, ranging from the dirt-encrusted old woodsman,

Rancid Crabtree, to the daft but well-meaning Mrs. Swisher.

Mon, Oct 17 // 05:00 pm to 10:00 pm

More info Less info

The Sun Valley Jazz and Music Festival has partnered with the Nampa Civic Center to bring two nights of exceptional music and food: Creole Zydeco served up with Cajun food on Monday, Oct. 17, and classic swing jazz, wine and hors d'oeuvres on Tuesday, Oct. 18.

“It’s exciting to team up with Sun Valley Jazz and Music Festival and showcase exceptional talent at the Nampa Civic Center before moving on to Sun Valley for special events that same week,” Civic Center Director John Cantlon said. “The performances will be completely different and music lovers may want to buy tickets for each night.”

The Oct. 17 show will feature Creole Zydeco music, provided by Gator Nation, a high energy band representing the music of Southern Louisiana in all its forms from Cajun, Zydeco, and New Orleans style R & B. Not only will guests hear great music, but they can clap, stomp or dance to the lively music after a meal featuring Cajun food.

Brianne Grey with Van Paepeghem & Sons will set the tone while guests enjoy classic Cajun food and cocktails from the Civic Center’s full-service caterer, Sodexo, with dinner starting at 5 p.m.

Moscow Ballet: Swan Lake

Tue, Nov 08 // 07:00 pm to 09:30 pm

More info Less info

Revered as the epitome of classical ballets, Swan Lake is a gripping tale of love, betrayal, and the triumph of good over evil. It is the haunting story of Odette, a young maiden bewitched by the evil sorcerer von Rothbart under whose spell young maidens are condemned to be swans by day and human only at night. Odette is the Swan Queen. She is the most beautiful and wears a magnificent, bejeweled crown. In order to break the spell, a young man must swear undying love to the Swan Queen.

If he is unfaithful, she, and the swan maidens will be trapped forever. The Moscow Imperial Theater first performed Swan Lake in Moscow in 1877. Legendary composer Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky was commissioned to write the score. After several revisions, the ballet attained critical success in 1894/95 when choreographers Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov produced it for the St. Petersburg Ballet.

JIM GAFFIGAN FULLY DRESSED TOUR

Sun, Dec 11 // 08:00 pm to 10:00 pm

More info Less info

Actor, writer, producer, Grammy nominated comedian, New York Times best-selling author, top touring performer, and multi-platinum selling father of five Jim Gaffigan won’t be donning his birthday suit this summer as he packs up the tour bus and hits the road for his live “Fully Dressed,” arena and theatre tour.

“I’m so thrilled to be eating my way across America again…. Oh, wait, I’m doing shows too?” said a bewildered Gaffigan.

Gaffigan’s announcement comes on the heels of his biggest year yet. In 2015, Jim became one of only ten comedians in history to sell out the famed Madison Square Garden arena for the finale of his “Contagious” tour, he opened for Pope Francis in front of one million+ people in Philadelphia, and his television show, “The Jim Gaffigan Show,” debuted on TV Land to enormous ratings and reviews - with season two slated to premiere this summer. Most recently during Super Bowl 50, it was revealed that Jim is KFC’s new Colonel Sanders.

In 2016, Gaffigan does not let off the gas. He will be seen opposite Naomi Watts, Liev Schreiber, Ron Perlman and Elisabeth Moss in the independent drama, “The Bleeder.” He is also in production on the Falcon Films comedy, “Drunk Parents,” opposite Alec Baldwin and Salma Hayek and will lend his voice alongside Carl Reiner in China-based Original Force Animation’s animated feature, “Duck Duck Goose.”

More info Less info

Taylor Hicks is one of the most beloved and popular AMERICAN IDOL winners of all time.

From the start, Hicks’ material on the mega-hit show set him apart, with a unique take on Southern soul, R & B, country and blues. Sixty-four million votes were cast and nearly 37 million American viewers and more than 200 million viewers worldwide tuned in to crown Hicks the Season 5 winner of AMERICAN IDOL, making it one of the most-watched TV events of the last decade.

On Broadway, Hicks starred in the hit musical, GREASE as Teen Angel, and when asked to join the national tour, happily agreed. The 18-month tour connected him with fans across North America.

Hicks, who hails from Birmingham, Ala., had music on his mind from childhood. As a young adult, he became a fixture around the Southeast, playing concerts and club dates with visiting stars like James Brown, Tom Petty, Jackson Browne, Robert Randolph, Keb’ Mo’ and Widespread Panic, among others. Hicks also released the independent albums “In Your Time” and “Under the Radar.” Later, these albums were compiled and released by Vanguard Records as “Early Works.”
